ELYRIA – A man riding in a wheelchair and armed with a machete when he allegedly robbed a Lake Avenue store has been indicted on aggravated robbery and criminal trespassing charges.
Graham Ley, 34, allegedly was inside the C Supermarket, where he had previously been banned, on Aug. 9 when he was asked to leave by clerk Virginia Tipton, Elyria police have said.
Tipton told police that he put three magazines into the basket of his motorized wheelchair and left the store. When she confronted him in the parking lot, Tipton reported that Ley swung a machete at her several times.
When police arrived, Ley refused to drop the machete and instead put it in a holster on his wheelchair. He was then arrested at gunpoint by officers.
Ley had a number of encounters with Elyria police, including leading them on a low-speed chase in July after allegedly keying a car.
Ley has been ordered to undergo a mental health examination after pleading not guilty by reason of insanity to various charges in Elyria Municipal Court, according to court records.
