LAGRANGE – A high school student who made a threatening joke at a lunch table Wednesday afternoon is in hot water with school and police officials.
Keystone Schools Superintendent Franco Gallo would not say exactly what the student said at Keystone High School. He only called it “an inappropriate statement or threat.”
“We immediately started an investigation and it was deemed not a true threat,” Gallo said. “But the student is still facing consequences.”
Gallo said the student’s parents were called as well as the local police.
“You can’t use those kinds of words today,” he said. “This should serve as a reminder that every parent should talk to their children about things you just can’t joke about in school.”
Gallo would not identify the grade of the student or discuss the discipline taken against him, but said the student code of conduct includes everything from a conversation to expulsion.
Gallo said he learned of the issue late in the afternoon. The school day went on without interruption, he said, and it included a clap out for student athletes. Ben Ocheltree will compete in the State Wrestling Tournament starting Thursday.
Gallo said the LaGrange police will increase presence at the school this week as a precaution.
