ELYRIA — An Avon man whose arrest on child abuse charges led police to a drug trafficking operation has been indicted along with his girlfriend.
Michael Garcia, 33, is charged with felonious assault, domestic violence, endangering children, having weapons under disability and trafficking in drugs. Brittney Hopkins, 26, is charged with trafficking in drugs.
Garcia was arrested in April after returning his then-8-month-old son to his mother, who lives in Lorain. The boy, who had spent the previous day with Garcia, was badly bruised and had a small scratch under his eye, and his maternal grandmother reported the injuries to police.
A Lorain police report said the boy was taken to Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital for treatment of a possible skull fracture. He also reportedly had marijuana in his system, according to the report.
Police went to Hopkins’ Shore Drive home a few days later to arrest Garcia with the help of U.S. marshals and suspected there might be drug activity in the house.
That led police to get a search warrant and discover what they described as a drug trafficking operation.
Officers seized four guns, cell phones, crack cocaine and marijuana.
Both Garcia and Hopkins are free on bond and due to appear for arraignment next week.
