ELYRIA — An Elyria police officer has been on paid administrative leave since May 13 while police complete an internal investigation that city officials said could result in criminal charges.

Danielle Goscewski

Elyria Police Chief Duane Whitely declined to discuss the specifics of what Officer Danielle Goscewski is suspected of, but he did confirm investigators are looking into her interactions with people who were being sought by police.

Goscewski’s handling of weapons also is under review, Whitely confirmed, but declined to say if that meant personal or department-issued firearms.

“We’re following up on some complaints we’ve received,” Whitely said. “… It was enough for us to take her off the road.”

Whitely said reports dealing with the case are considered investigative and are not subject to public records disclosure rules at this time.

Mike Duff, Goscewski’s attorney, declined to comment on the investigation into his client.

Whitely said Goscewski, who joined the Police Department in August, is still a probationary employee and not a member of the union, although she is still entitled to some of the same protections that unionized police officers enjoy. The department’s probationary period lasts one year.

Elyria Law Director Scott Serazin said his office will review the matter once the investigation is completed to determine if Goscewski committed any crimes. He also declined to comment on the specifics of the case.

“We want to let the internal affairs process work,” he said.
