Two dead in single-car crash in Penfield Twp.

PENFIELD TWP. — Two Medina County men died early Sunday morning in a single-vehicle crash on state Route 18, according to the Ohio Highway Patrol.

Benjamin Metzger, 25, of Litchfield Township, was driving his 2008 Ford F-350 east on Route 18, just past Indian Hollow Road, when his pickup traveled off the south side of the road, struck an embankment, began to overturn and hit a tree, a news release from the patrol’s Elyria post said.

Metzger and passenger Jeremy Leiter, 24, also of Litchfield Township, died in the crash, the release said.

Wellington Fire Chief Mike Wetherbee said his department responded to the crash at 12:31 a.m. Sunday, and both men died at the scene.

The news release said unsafe speed was a contributing factor in the crash and noted it appeared Metzger was not wearing a seat belt, but it wasn’t clear at the accident scene if Leiter was wearing his.

The crash remains under investigation.
