LORAIN – Two juveniles were arrested Monday several hours after an armed robbery on the city’s west side.

Lorain police Detective Buddy Sivert said around 1 p.m. two masked men entered Jay’s Mini Mart, 2239 North Leavitt Road, and one was armed with a rifle. The men ordered the clerk to hand over money, Sivert said, and after the clerk complied a witness said the two masked men ran from the store to a home on W. 23rd Street.

Police obtained a warrant and searched the home but were unable to locate the suspects, Sivert said. Shortly after 4 p.m. a detective spotted two juveniles suspected of being involved in the robbery in the 2200 block of W. 23rd Street.

“After a short foot chase two juveniles were apprehended a short distance from their home,” Sivert said.

The names of the juveniles aren’t being released, Sivert said. The weapon wasn’t fired during the robbery or used to hit the clerk, he added.

The suspects took an undisclosed amount of cash, Sivert said, and detectives are working to recover additional evidence.

Sivert said the two juveniles are “fairly young” and the department doesn’t have much of a history with them. They will both be taken to the juvenile detention home, he said, and the matter will be handled by juvenile court.
